HISTORICAL EUROPEAN MARTIAL ARTS

Sword & Buckler

Our medieval sword and buckler program is based on the combat system depicted in Ms I.33.
This manuscript predates the fight books of Liechtenauer and is unique for the era in that it is lavishly illustrated, albeit without either perspective or foreshortening as neither were understood at the time.

Because of this, I.33 is notoriously difficult to interpret, so we practice non-cooperative application and
testing of the techniques and find the system both practical and effective.

In our classes, you will learn the guards and their oppositions, the binds and their counters and how the five words from the Liechtenauer tradition are essential also to I.33. Most importantly, I.33 will teach you distance and timing and how to use them in conjunction with the weapons to take and keep the initiative.

We provide the opportunity to learn these techniques and their theoretical foundations as
well as test them through extensive bouting sessions. We look forward to you joining us on this journey.
